Members of Alliance to Develop Power are Real People with Real Solutions building Real Power. ADP grassroots leaders fight for just policy reform, create new cooperatively controlled businesses, and build strong, vibrant communities, all while empowering a diverse grassroots base - we are creating a sustainable community economy that leverages power, relationships, and resources.

STRATEGIES for change.The ADP Community Economy model sustains and transforms communities in the Pioneer Valley. For twenty years, ADP has been creating the world as it should be – and the world is watching.Learn strategies for shared investment and shared prosperity.

ADP’s transforms neighborhoods through the creation and accumulation of assets that are collectively owned and directed by ADP members - low income people and people of color. These assets create high paying jobs, homes, and enriching services for our members. They are valued at nearly $68 million in 2012 and continue to grow.

At ADP, members are the experts on how to fix our broken economy. We are building collective power to secure the things we need in our neighborhoods, and for our families. There is no “external” solution that is going to come from the outside to save us. We are the solution.

ADP’s Community Economy Model is a nationally known strategy for sustainable community transformation. Through it, members build economic power, political power, and people power - improving the standard of living for all people in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts.

The ADP Community Economy Model:

  • Addresses racial and economic disparity
  • Achieves power over the decisions that affect our lives
  • Builds strong and healthy communities

Three strategies provide points of entry and zones of enrichment to members:

  • In the ADP Community Economy, members become workers, directors, investors, customers, or innovators in ADP businesses and institutions; creating good jobs, economic power, new skills, and control over the decisions that affect our lives;

  • Members find voice and connection through Community Organizing campaigns that tackle issues that impact our community on the local, state and national level.

  • Community Building activities deepen relationships, expand our worldview, and strengthen neighborhoods through enriching, service-based programming, including arts and cultural celebrations.

Three drivers engage members in all 3 strategies:

  • Leadership Development identifies upcoming leaders in ADP’s base of members and develops and empowers them; building inter-connection and commitment. The diversity of the ADP community enables us to harness complementary strengths to adapt and face challenges together – eventually plugging all people into the Community Economy. An ADP Leader is a member who demonstrates a commitment to participation, develops relationships that benefit the organization, engages in personal testimonial leading to the “story of us,” and takes a proactive role in organizational governance and decision making.
  • Base Building ADP staff and ADP Leaders conduct annual intensive one-on-one campaigns in ADP member communities. 1,110 meetings were conducted between October 2011 and March 2012, identifying issues of concern and providing the basis for 2012 issue-based organizing.
  • Members take on leadership roles as they engage in Civic Engagement on issues that directly impact us all, bringing direct action to the political and corporate targets who hold power over our lives- leading to key policy reforms and resource allocation.

Women Light the Way

Sarah Wray is one of ADP's newest leaders. A single mother living in Spring Meadow apartments, Sarah noticed adolescent girls needed a place of sanctuary and support. Determined to break “the cycle,” Sarah told ADP leader Lisa Colon she wanted to start “Girl Talk” meetings in her living room. Seventeen girls between the ages of 11 to 19 meet after school to share, support each other, and think big about their futures. Sarah is quickly becoming more involved in ADP than ever before, engaging in neighborhood safety campaigns and taking a leading role in the creation of the ADP Bodega.

Shared Investment, Shared Prosperity

Adrian Garcia became involved in 2007 through ADP Faith, a coalition of more than 35 Latino churches in the Pioneer Valley. Through ADP, Adrian has become a nationally known immigration reform spokesperson. Adrian is a key figure in the ADP Community Economy, a laborer at worker-controlled United for Hire, and preparing for a major role in the ADP Bodega.

Hope: How Can We?

Keya Hicks joined ADP in 1996, when she moved into one of ADP’s affordable tenant run cooperative housing projects, Spring Meadow Apartments. Her son Chris Alvarez is 3rd generation Springfield, and a full time ADP Organizer. Here they recount the experience of the June 2011 tornado, and the transformation that the ADP community made – turning trauma to public art and community dialogue in the South End. In the Summer of 2012 Keya will also join ADP staff as Deputy Director of Communication and Development.

VISIONS of a new home.The ADP Change Center at 130 Union Street is an incubator where ADP Leaders create and implement strategies for grassroots economic change in the Pioneer Valley. Make the Center as strong and effective as the people who convene here.Explore the community-engaged design plans for 130 Union Street.

The ADP Change Center is a home and strategy and organizing center for 5,000 ADP members in the Pioneer Valley. Hit by the June 2011 tornado, it now overlooks two empty lots and a landscape of blue tarps in the South End of Springfield: a culturally diverse neighborhood of Springfield with a long history of arts, cuisine, strong families and industry.

This 100-year-old building is a place of transformation and power for our community, hosting meetings with government officials, such as Governor Deval Patrick, and celebrations with hundreds from throughout the Pioneer Valley.

ADP leaders worked collaboratively with Joseph Krupczynski, UMass Amherst, Associate Professor of Architecture and Design, and the Center for Design Engagement (C*DE) to develop community influenced designs or the Change Center. This shared vision will transform the entire ADP headquarters by maximizing efficiency, utility and aesthetics. C*DE is dedicated to bringing progressive architectural design, ideas, and services to communities and community-based organizations in Massachusetts — particularly those underserved by the architectural profession.

SUPPORT the shift

A donation to the ADP Change Center is an investment in the ADP Community Economy, which injects nearly $20 million into the Pioneer Valley each year.

Funds are recycled through ADP multiple times, creating sustainable community transformation. Here’s an example of how:

A donation supports 15 laborers at worker-controlled United for Hire with paid on-the-job training as they renovate the ADP Change Center. Many of these laborers then use their income to pay rent at ADP Affordable Housing Cooperatives. These 770 units of housing employ 19 ADP members as property managers and community builders, many of whom also pay rent to live in the properties.

Finally, a percent of the profits from all cooperative institutions are returned to ADP to seed new economic development projects, like the ADP Bodega.

Then the cycle begins again.

ADP COMMUNITY BUILDERS: building the change center

ADP’s Community Builder Wall will be the first thing you see when you walk in the main entrance. It will cover a two-story wall that is visible from the 1st floor community space and the 2nd floor organizing space.
