ADP Recent Accomplishments
Winning Just Policy Reforms Locally, Statewide, and Nationally:
- 2011: With Green Justice Coalition, won groundbreaking Community Mobilization and Job Creation pilot with Western Mass Electric Company to establish “ADP Green Zone”, that will improve access to Energy Efficiency services for low income and communities of color, raise wages and standards in the weatherizing industry, and create urgently needed jobs in distressed communities.
- 2010: ADP Community Convention attended by 650 leaders. Secured commitments from MA Governor Deval Patrick, Congressman Richard Neal, Federal Department of Labor officials and Western Massachusetts Electric Company for ADP Equity Agenda, Immigrant and Worker Rights, and Green Justice. Publicly announced creation of ADP Faith, representing 30 Latino Churches and upwards of 2,000 new members.
- 2010: Secured critical support of U.S. Senator Scott Brown leading to passage of groundbreaking Financial Reform bill after leading series of direct actions and securing a face to face meeting, the first meeting between the Senator and a MA community group.
- 2010: Held series of meetings with Governor Deval Patrick and Cabinet re: ADP Equity Agenda and Community Values platform. Successfully secured support fromMA Governor Deval Patrick and MA Congressional delegation for federal legislation to create 1 million publicly funded Jobs.
- 2009: ADP Equity Agenda Campaign leads national and statewide negotiations with Governor Patrick and President Obama officials to secure equitable distribution of Economic Stimulus funds and targeted investments and jobs for distressed communities, low income people and people of color.
- 2009: ADP joins steering committee of Massachusetts Green Justice Coalition to secure equitable distribution of resources, improve wages and standards, and achieve accountability and transparency in the MA Green Communities Act. Negotiating Groundbreaking Pilot Program with Utility companies.
- 2009: ADP Youth leaders lead Statewide Youth Leadership Summit with office of Governor Patrick, turning out 250 youth from region.
- 2009:ADP attends Showdown in Chicagoand leads banking demands on investing in sustainable community controlled development
- 2009: ADP 100 Days of Action and Beyond Campaign engages upwards of 1,000 grassroots leaders participating in national policy campaigns to win Fair and Humane Immigration Reform, Health Care for All, Affordable Housing Preservation, Worker Justice and Living Wage Jobs. Played key role in successful campaign to expand Children’s Health Insurance with immigrant inclusion and inclusive hiring in House Climate Change bill.
- 2009: ADP plays lead role in Massachusetts New Americans Agenda to develop statewide policies to support immigrant integration. ADP Public Meeting attended by over 400 immigrants, key officials of Governor Patrick Administration, and over 10 local elected officials. NAA platform presented to Governor Patrick.
Building a Community Economy Valued at Over $65 Million:
- Ongoing: ADP Community Economy recruits and employs 125 members in family sustainable, living wage, career track jobs.
- 2011: Convened day-long tour of ADP Community Economy with Carol Galante, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Secured commitment to work in partnership to lift up ADP model with regional HUD office and federal HUD Sustainable Communities program.
- 2010: ADP’s United for Hire, expands into Energy Efficiency sector. Secures small business loan from local Community Bank to purchase equipment and provide working capital. Negotiates multi-million dollar WAP sub-contract.
- 2009: ADP partners with Workforce Investment Board and City of Springfield in securing Pathways out of Poverty grant to provide job training and create living wage jobs in the Energy Efficiency sector. 5 ADP members trained in Weatherizing.
- 2008 -- Ongoing: ADP Worker Center is leading national groundbreaking pilot project to provide non-predatory financial services for the un/derbanked. 350 members sign up for ADP Power Card, a prepaid debit card and loading center.
- 2007 – Ongoing: Opened ADP Worker Center / Casa Obrera, the nations’ first and only membership-based low wage and immigrant worker center with full voting member of the AFL-CIO. Over 400 dues paying and 1,000 affiliate members join.
- Ongoing: ADP affiliates operate network of four volunteer-run food cooperatives housed and operated in affiliates. Network distributes 200,000 pounds of food annually to more than 1,000 people/ month.
- Ongoing: Won $60.5 million in federal, state, and local funds to purchase, rehab and transform 1,400 units of at risk housing to tenant owned, permanently affordable cooperatives and the collective ownership of $65 million of real estate, the largest holding of tenant owned housing in the United States and the economic anchor of the ADP Community Economy.
- Ongoing: ADP affiliate institutions establish 130 Union Street Cooperative (purchased in 2003), a 6,600 square foot formerly abandoned building to house the ADP and its ever-expanding locally controlled economy. Hundreds of ADP leaders and volunteers completed all renovations with donated materials from area businesses, labor organizations and allies.
Ongoing: Ongoing operation of United for Hire (created in 2001) ADP affiliate worker-controlled cooperative business, providing on the job training and living wage jobs with profit sharing to members, capturing revenues and surplus from the ADP Community Economy and preventing capital flight from distressed communities. Completed $600,000 in sales in 2010.
Developing Grassroots Leadership, Civic Engagement, and Building Community
- 2010: ADP Voter Engagement Campaign expands and successfully registers, educates, and mobilizes 10,000 swing and unlikely voters to the polls in support of the ADP Equity Agenda. Over 30,000 contacts made via door-to-door canvassing, lit drops, and phone banking. Over 100 ADP leaders participate in campaign.
- 2010: Developed Green Economy / Equity Agenda Outreach and Training Curriculum, trained upwards of 400 community members, signed up over 150 people for MassSAVE, and collected over 1,000 signatures in support of the Green Justice Coalition statewide campaign.
- 2010: ADP leads community-driven outreach for 2010 Census, successfully educating upwards of 5,000 low-income people, people of color, and immigrants on the purpose and importance of the Census and how to fill out the forms.
- 2010: ADP Summit engages 100 key leaders in study of cooperative principles, sustainability, surplus allocation, and begins restructure of ADP’s $65 million Community Economy.
- 2009: ADP Summer Youth Leadership Academy trains 40 ADP Youth in community organizing. Summer jobs funded by Economic Stimulus dollars. ADP Youth Leader, Chris Alvarez appointed to Governors Statewide Youth Council.
- 2008: ADPValues Voters Campaign registered 300 new voters and identified, educated, and mobilized 5,000 new voters to the polls.
- 2008 -- Ongoing: Convened 3-day ADP Leadership Academy, graduating 55 new and 12 advanced leaders. 50 Worker Center members graduate from ESOL & Democracy School. ADP Worker Center leaders train 2,000 immigrants in Know Your Rights.
- 2008 – Ongoing: ADP Worker Center / Casa Obrera created Good Neighbor Fund to provide funds for immigrant members in detention or emergency legal proceedings. ADP Soccer League with over 300 players established as fundraising activity for GNF.
- Ongoing: ADP Food Cooperatives serve 60,000 meals to over 500 children in summer months, provide holiday distribution of over 1,200 turkeys to ADP families. Coop volunteers distribute fresh produce, pastries, and breads donated by area businesses.
- Ongoing: ADP affiliates organize annual events to foster community building. Events include holiday parties with gifts for every child living in the housing cooperatives; summer block parties and festivals with food, music, and entertainment. Events are attended by upwards of 1,000 people / year.
- Ongoing: ADP’s volunteer leader base operates computer centers in four affiliate neighborhoods. These centers are available to 750 families and are used by 150 people weekly. Youth tutoring and leadership development engaging over 100 youth weekly.
